Error: Code 39 for Webscan Device Driver / Core Isolation

Explanation for a Windows error that can show up occasionally with Webscan units

2024/09/15

Question

sThe Webscan Device in the Windows Device Manager shows that the Driver is not working properly with a Code 39 error.

Answer

According to the Microsoft Support website:

"Core isolation is a security feature of Microsoft Windows that protects important core processes of Windows from malicious software by isolating them in memory. It does this by running those core processes in a virtualized environment.

Memory Integrity is one feature of core isolation which regularly verifies the integrity of the code running those core processes in an attempt to prevent any attacks from altering them.”

Older Webscan Device Drivers are not compatible with the Memory Integrity feature. Disabling Core Isolation will allow for the Drivers to install and be accessible, however, re-enabling Core Isolation will prevent access to the Drivers. Leaving Core Isolation disabled is not an option for some organizations.

Install Webscan Device Drivers that are compatible with Core Isolation.

Please follow the instructions below to resolve the issue:

  1. Using the link below download the zip file to the target computer.
    http://www.webscaninc.com/trucheckupdates/TruCheckUSB/Sdriver2020/OSE_U3V_Driver(Win10).zip

  3. Find the unit listed in the Device Manager with an exclamation mark showing that it is not installed correctly.
  4. Right click the unit and select “Uninstall Device” IMPORTANT STEP - Add a check to the box to “delete files”.
  5. Unplug, and then re-plug the USB cord to make the device show up again in Device Manager. It should show up again with an exclamation mark.
  6. Right-click the device and select “Update Driver”.
  7. Select Browse to find the Driver in the OSE_U3V_Driver(Win10) folder on your desktop and go to the x64 folder. Do not automatically search for updates and click “Next”.
