Question
My VC5 keeps restarting, and I have a In-Sight D900 series sensor connected to it.
Answer
This is a known effect that happens when you have the In-Sight D900 powered via 24V *and* PoE. The simplest fix is to remove the 24V power from the IO cable.
When a PoE connection is used, the In-Sight D900 multifunction port GND terminal will be at a voltage derived from the PoE voltage that is VERY different from the power ground of the PC host / VC5 / VC200 that is supplying PoE. Any connection between the In-Sight D900 multifunction port GND and the host ground will cause a problem.
If you connect an isolated 24V supply to the PWR and GND of the In-Sight D900 and make no other connections to that supply, the sensor will be powered and operate properly regardless of whether a PoE or non-PoE ethernet connection is present, as implied by the In-Sight D900 manual page 21. However, that supply will be a temptation for someone to make a connection to it for some other encoder, sensor, or other device and inadvertently create a connection to host ground, compromising the isolation and causing a problem.
