Note:

Master Slave is an older term that has been replaced by Multi Reader Sync, Primary is used for Master and Secondary for Slave, the terms are completely interchangeable.

Answer

First you will need to access the "settings". Open the reader you wish to be the master/primary, click the "Settings" tab and for the next step there will be two different ways to open it based on if you have an older or newer version of DataMan Setup Tool.

Older: Click the "System Settings" (farthest to the right) drop-down arrow, then under that drop down click "Master/Slave".

Newer: Click the "Multi-Reader Sync" option, it should be the second from the right.

If you do not have either of these options then it means your reader is likely not capable of Multi-Reader Sync. If that is the case and you know this reader should be able to use Multi-Reader Sync, then you should just need to get a feature key.

Past this, the steps are the same, it should just look different at some points.

On the page that opens after clicking the "Master/Slave" or "MRS" icon, you should see secondary reader time out and PTP settings as well as an "Edit" icon, please click the "Edit" icon and then click "yes" that you want to make a new grouping/edit an existing one, as long as you do not save, this will not change anything. If there are multiple groupings available, click the one you wish to edit.

On the next page, there should be to large sectioned off boxes with some options above it. The right box has all the readers you have available to you while the left will have all the readers in the existing group (if there is a group). If there are any errors at this point, please just click the "Refresh grouping info" at the top middle of the window, may of them should disappear. If you have an image only reader and you get a "trigger mismatch" error, ignore this error it is simply telling you that your image only reader (should be single external) is not the same trigger type as your other readers (often not single external, especially for logistics applications).

To make a group click inside the left box and then click the "New Group" icon at the top, a new folder should appear in the box. Click this folder to highlight it, you can now either drag readers from the right (discovered readers) into your group, or you can highlight them and click the little arrow symbol in between the boxes to move them over. On the left you now need to click on the folder again to highlight it then up top, click the "toggle group triggering" so that it is highlighted in yellow, this will allow the slaves/secondary readers to be triggered by the master/primary. Now highlight the reader you want to be the master/primary and then click the "Set Master Reader" icon and that will be the master/primary reader.

When you have the group as you want it, click the "save and apply grouping to devices" icon then the "Save" icon. Your readers should be in a group now. Please go back to the master readers settings again (with the PTP and secondary reader timeout settings) and see if the "master/primary reader" setting is yes on the master, if it is then it is the groups master, if not then something went wrong.

Common Errors

Master Device not specified: This means there is no device specified as master in the grouping. Even if the device says it is a master on the Master/Slave page, this grouping does not think it is. To fix this just highlight the reader you wish to be master, then click “Set Master Device” at the top of the page. This can be a cause for the “Groupname mismatch” error.

Groupname mismatch: This means that this groupings setting does not match the ones on the readers. So, the settings may all be right here in the grouping but not in the readers. Push the settings to the readers by clicking “Apply and save grouping to devices”. This should get rid of the groupname mismatch errors.
