CC-Link On Cognex Devices

This article explains the different CC-Link protocols that are available on Cognex DataMan and In-Sight devices.

Details

CC-Link was originally developed by Mitsubishi. CC-Link is based on serial RS485 network, while CC-Link IE is based on Ethernet network.

On CC-Link IE there are more protocols available, for example, SLMP, SLMP Scanner, or CC-Link IE Field Basic.

Cognex devices can support the below protocols, but please note that not all Cognex devices support all of them.

CC-Link

  • RS485 based
  • needs CIO-MICRO-CC module
  • only old In-Sight cameras with firmware 4.x.x support this (it is not supported in 5.1.0 and above firmware versions)
  • other Cognex devices do not support this protocol

SLMP

  • Ethernet-based
  • camera is the client and controller (like PLC or robot) is the server
  • event-controlled, acyclic communication
  • supported on In-Sight Explorer cameras
  • not supported on In-Sight Vision Suite cameras (for example D900, L4000, IS2800, IS3800, L38)

SLMP Scanner

  • Ethernet-based
  • camera is the client and controller (like PLC or robot) is the server
  • cyclical communication (polling interval is set on the client side)
  • supported on In-Sight Explorer cameras and on In-Sight Vision Suite cameras

CC-Link IE Field Basic

  • Ethernet-based
  • camera is the server and controller (like PLC or robot) is the client (this is the opposite of the SLMP Scanner)
  • cyclical communication
  • supported on In-Sight Explorer cameras with firmware version 5.7.0 and above
  • supported on DataMan devices with firmware version 6.1.7 and above
  • not supported on In-Sight Vision Suite cameras (for example: D900, L4000, IS2800, IS3800, L38)
