Edge Intelligence Fails to Boot Properly with No Link Lights, or Hang from Systemctl Commands

Resolution guide for fixing boot issues with Edge Intelligence

15/09/2024

Details

Issue:

Observed behaviors include any of the following:

  1. System not booting within a 15 minute window
  2. System not shutting down within a 15 minute window (short press of power initiates shutdown and takes ~2 minutes on a healthy system)
  3. No link lights
  4. Hang from systemctl
  5. Hang from update-grub
  6. Hang on console login (after entering username and pressing ENTER, no password prompt appears)

To date, this only manifests on the Walmart X33 lines but any EI unit is susceptible.

Resolution:

To resolve the issue do the following:

  1. Power EI off (press and hold power button until the blue light turns off)
  2. Connect keyboard and monitor to EI (for the monitor, you can coopt the RTM touchscreen with either a DisplayPort to VGA adapter, DP to VGA cable, or DP to HDMI cable)
  3. Power on EI (short press of power button) and repeatedly press ESC until the grub menu appears.  (If you get to a “grub>” prompt, enter the command “normal” then press ENTER immediately followed by ESC).
  4. In the Grub menu, select “Advanced options for Ubuntu” and press ENTER
  5. Select a kernel entry prior to 5.4.0-100 (such as 5.4.0-89) (each kernel will have two options – one blank and one in recovery mode. choose the blank version)
  6. The system should now boot and run properly.  Inform EI Support to apply a permanent fix on the above system.
