Save Configuration (CFG) captures the parameters that are generally not reader specific. For example, if you have three DataMan readers doing a similar job, you could develop the application on one reader, save the configuration, then load it on the other two readers. This option yields a ".cfg" file.
Backup Device (CDC) will save all available parameters on the reader. This includes everything from the CFG (above), plus Reader Name, Communication Settings, and any other reader-specific data. This gives you a ".cdc" file.
The current DataMan backup (DMB) is a compressed zip file of the device's CFG, CDC and an XLM file containing device specific information. You can open this file with compression applications such as Win-Zip to access the individual files. Newer versions of the DataMan Setup tool (DMST) will use the DMB type of a backup by default. This does not prevent the DMST from being able to restore a camera from older CFG or CDC files.
It may be prudent (best practice) to save a backup of a freshly configured device while using the most current DMST and device firmware. Although not common, restoring from a backup where their exists combination of influences from different firmware versions and saved configurations using different versions of the DMST have led to application instabilities and corruption.
